Jason finds After Meal's premium shaved ice worth the hype, scoring the Thai milk tea 7.8 with the matcha and hojicha close behind. The Japanese-style cafe nails the soft, fluffy texture, but RM29-30 a bowl shows KL cafes outpricing each other.

Highlights

  • Price: RM29-30 per shaved ice as cafes keep outpricing each other
  • Taste: Salty cheese foam balances the Thai milk tea; matcha is umami-rich without feeling grassy
  • Ambiance: Japanese candy crossover cafe, like Muji meets Ikea with a warm heart
  • Other: Taro balls and roasted salted almonds are quality toppings

Jackson Wang Sik, it's crazy the shave ice over there, after meal dessert. It's crazy the shave ice. The new menu they have is Thai ice, Thai milk tea. You gotta try that. So I did try that in after meal dessert. To me it looks like a Japanese candy crossover looking cafe. Think Muji meets Ikea but with a warm heart. The Got7 Jackson Wang grifters order this deserve to be in the Tanjung Rambutan. 30 Ringgit, Memang Mahanaman Pui. So similar to Char Mui. Their signature fragrant butteriness from their Thai milk tea. T H I double C. It's like cheese foam, slightly salty one. It reminds me a little of Gong Cha. Salty helps to balance some of the sweetness here. See this is what I like. Dishes that surprise the taste but I'm gonna take a swap of this. I don't know what this is. It tastes like those Melaka brown sugar. Like the thing in Kataya but it's dry. For me Char Mui if you keep eating it, it can taste like medicine. Jackson Wang, I'm giving this 7.8. Ceremonial Matcha for 30 Ringgit. Now I see every cafe that's selling shaved ice is trying to outprice each other, going higher and higher. Have a look at this, like real thick grass. Yup, immediately feel the umami-ness. The texture of this shaved ice is very similar to Snow Plus where it's very soft, fluffy. And when you press it with your tongue, it becomes a little dense one. Bottom there, they slid some jelly ball. Milk tea boba. It's like the crystal boba from Gong Cha. It's Toi. What I like about their matcha, it has very strong umami flavors without feeling too grassy. And it gives you a bitterness that lingers past your bite one. Taro ball. A little sweet and chewy. Typical to what you would expect from taro ball. 15 Ringgit is insane for me. I can see the quality. I think they really put a lot of good matcha powder inside here. You know a matcha is good also when it has a bit of saltiness. 7.4. Here comes the Oji Cha. How considerate of After Meal to make this 1 Ringgit cheaper compared to their Ceremonial Matcha at 29 Ringgit. The roasted Oji Cha here is so obvious. Mild sweetness that comes with some toasted rose tea flavor. And that sweetness goes a little further with that mashy red beet. And their taro ball, it doesn't feel artificial. Try some of their sliced almonds by itself. Nicely roasted. Slightly salted to bring the flavor out a little more. Crunchy at the same time, soft. I generally prefer Oji Cha flavor more. But I can recognize the Ceremonial Matcha has a more thicker cow flavor. 7.3.
