Jason scores this lesser-known ayam penyet spot 7.3, praising the kau-kau deep-fried crispy skin and good sambal. The lele portion is very small and the dada's rempah barely penetrates the meat, so it doesn't stand out from other ayam penyet places.

Highlights

  • Price: RM9 per ayam or lele set, extra sambal free
  • Taste: Brittle crispy skin with soft tender meat, sambal spice builds slowly
  • Ambiance: Unassuming, doesn't look like much but food-focused
  • Other: Extra chilli box provided but tastes like watered-down chilli

Here to try the super secret ayam penyek bukit. You see, I wanted to try ayam penyek mat lampeh but it was closed. Some kind people showed me that there was a less known ayam penyek nearby to try. This place doesn't look like much but we came here for the food. I always order dada and then lele. I asked for extra sambal, they give it no extra chaat, RM9, this is also RM9. First thing is their sambal, texture-wise it's slightly more watery and I don't know if they really put udang paste but that's what I'm catching with my taste but spice level is 4 out of 10. First it's not a bukak baju spicy level. You feel a bit of the cake but taste is quite good. It was so crispy, it looks quite small to be honest. Yes, it's more unhealthy but the case is better in my opinion when the oil gets into the meat and you can taste that here, the yellow-yellow oil and the outer skin is brittley and crispy but it still holds its shape and the inside meat is soft tender. Only thing I don't like, portion of the lele is very small. Lele crispy test, if it's not crispy enough ah, the bone will be too hard to bite with. The test passed. How about the whole head? Can you eat the whole head? Nice of fried oil taste. Tempeh is my least favourite in a ayam penyeh but when I pair it with the sambal, anything that pairs with a penyeh sambal is good. Same-same lah. The tauhu, normal, nothing stands up. 7.3. If you feel your penyeh sambal is not spicy enough is they give this box of chilli right here. Is it similar to the sambal taste? No, right? No. Mmm, it's just like pure water and chilli. Let's test the ayam dadah. I know you will say ayam dadah memang is going to be dry but there are some juicy ones I tell you. It's just not easy to make it. It's actually not bad. If it's dry, what I would like to do in this case especially when it's penyeh sambal. The spice comes when you keep eating it. It builds up slowly to the point where your mouth does get a bit hicky lah. The rempah and the marination didn't get into the meat. One thing I like about their ayam penyeh, they deep fry kau-kau their chicken. What happens is your skin gets very crisp. Mmm, it's like eating those crispy skin snacks. Rasa boleh rasa but the daging almost to the level of rasa kosong. Let me just dip it with this. The rempah doesn't have a distinctive flavour like some ayam penyehs I've tried. You see people cupping grass or buzzing grass near your area and then you will get that morning's grass smell. It tastes exactly like that which is most ayam penyeh lah. It's a toss-up between a little more extra flavour or a meatier portion. If that's the case, they both would have the same score at 7.3. Sambal penyeh, it doesn't stand out.
