The verdict
GreatJason lets Melbourne locals decide his meals for a whole day on a RM300 (~AUD 105) budget, working through Guzman y Gomez (6.5), Takedon's Thai fried chicken (7.2), a comped kingfish sashimi at Chin Chin, and Lune's almond croissant (7.4). The day peaks at Charr'd, where the smoky, juicy double burger with truffle sauce finally earns his first-ever 10/10 — worth the 40-minute queue and the price. He ends having spent RM240, taking a leftover burger back to the hotel that is still 'sedap gila'.
Highlights
- Price: RM300 converted to ~AUD 105 at a 2.84 rate; RM240 spent by day's end; Chin Chin comped the ~RM100 sashimi after his honest feedback; Charr'd double is pricey even in AUD but 'worth the queue, worth the price'.
- Taste: GYG burrito tasty like meaty nachos but soggy and doughy (6.5); Takedon fried chicken creamy, sweet and savoury with green curry (7.2); Chin Chin kingfish sashimi felt like 'eating sauce'; Lune almond croissant crispy with cream centre but wanted more almond punch (7.4); Charr'd double: juicy-soft from bun to patty, most aromatic smoked beef ever, smokiness mixed with truffle sauce — 10/10.
- Ambiance: Cold, rainy Melbourne day; Charr'd had a crazy queue with a 40-minute wait and ranks among the world's top burgers; Chin Chin was the fanciest-looking and coldest restaurant of the day.
- Other: Every meal was chosen by locals and Uber drivers under strict challenge rules; Malaysians living in Melbourne didn't count as locals; he bought the burger again to bring back to the hotel.

I'm in Melbourne asking locals to decide what I eat for a whole day. Oh yeah, okay. But I've got three rules. I cannot influence their decision. I only have 300 ringgit and I must survive until dinner. So this is how much I have left. Can I find the ultimate Melbourne food? 45. It's 10am now, which means it's the start of my challenge. Let's go. What should I eat right now? I wanted to eat... Many comments. I'm afraid I... They seem not so confident with the answer, but let's try. Straightway gonna convert 300 ringgit to Australian dollars. That exchange rate will be 2.84. Boom. $100 shrimp dollars doesn't seem much when a char kway teow can cost a quarter of that. And just like that, my first meal was almost 10% on my total budget. But I thought Australians would have a bigger portion. And my hand is not even big. Palm size. The hash brown inside marinated me. It tastes like you're eating meaty nachos. Quite tasty. The burrito is very soggy, doughy. 6.5. Bro, I need your help. Where would you leave me to go next? I think Takedon, just down there. I'm a fan of the Thai fried chicken with green curry sauce. This is supposed to be our snack spot. We noticed it was starting to get wet. We had no umbrella, nothing for the rain. My main concern is still not going over budget, so I ordered for 1% of him and shared with the girlfriend. That's a lot of fried chicken. The green curry, not much. But that creamy, sweet, savoury, all the way to the meat. This deep fry is like a dirty oil. Extra flavour. I think it's sadap. I could be too sweet for some. 7.2. Bro, you gotta do your honest review. How long have you been here? Me? All that. 10 years? This is my first day. Happy birthday. I met Malaysians who stayed here a long time, but for this challenge, I couldn't consider them locals. And because the rain was getting worse, I had to try a new strategy. Uber drivers. What do you think is the best food to eat? Chin Chin. Oh, ice and fusion. Ah. And whatever you order is good. This has got to be the fanciest looking restaurant we've been to so far, and coldest. Best selection is the King Fish Sashimi. Most people order this one? Yes. We're selling sashimi since we opened. This is King Fish Sashimi. Converted, will be around RM100 here for an appetiser. Raw cold tuna, dipped into Thai green chilli. And that's all I get. I think it takes away too much of the visual stuff. You feel like you're eating sauce. I was leaving here with more than a half of my budget gone, but the same witchers asked for my feedback and I did not expect a response to my answer. So if you don't really like the sashimi, it wasn't your taste, no worries about the bill. It will be on us. Thank you so much, yours. I really did not expect that. And they were so gracious about it. We get the same $33. With our balance intact, it's on to our fourth meal, not knowing how bad the rain was going to get. Can we survive until dinner? Where should we go eat right now? Definitely, they say the best croissant in the world is Loon. Loon is just behind you. Do you like that it's finally dessert? Since Chin Chin gave us some grain, I'm going to pay it forward to the girlfriend by ordering a hot chocolate because it is extremely cold. The world feels like a freezer right now. This is the best one. Okay, okay, I'll get this one. Okay. $13 almond croissant. And I don't know if this gives the girlfriend a trypophobia or not, the way they design and place their almonds. Wow. There's like cream in the middle. Crispy, tiny sweetness with the nuttiness from the almond. It's not bad. The almond could be stronger for me. It's a delicious bite. Just wish it could be a tiny bit more almond fresh. 40 million, but I don't have this taste of feeling back home. 7.4. 21 meals left, so maybe this time I can order one for the girlfriend. Truth is, it was very tough to get people to open up, especially when it started to rain towards the end. Buddy, where should I eat next? And sometimes when we do get someone... They're not locals. But after all that rain and rejection, that final suggestion was the craziest. Croissant cake. Where should we go eat dinner right now? Dinner right now. It's just around this corner only. I think the girlfriend would be more excited to compare to me. Oh my god. Look at the queue, it's crazy. The question is not even, is this expensive? It's, can we even get our order? We need to try like one of the biggest spots in Melbourne, which is Cha. They want like, I think top 50, some of the top 10 in the whole world. Best burger. I am no stranger to overhyped food. The best burger in Japan. Very pricey, even in Australian dollars. And of course, the queue. An endless stream of us, hoping on the off chance, it could be the best thing ever. This is the chart double. Mahal Naaman. Top 25 burger in the world. Let's dig in. 9.5. It looks so thick and juicy right, but it's effortless when you bite in with it. It's so soft from the bun to the patty, but it's not mushy soft, it's juicy soft. What makes this so sedap is the marination. I don't know what they smoked this with. This is the most aromatic from a beef burger ever, I've tried ever. I don't know, maybe because they mixed the smokiness with the truffle sauce. Worth the queue, worth the price. Yeah, this is the 10 out of 10 for me. Everything I spent was RM240. Queued 40 minutes and got the burger again. Only $1 left for chart. Say go Malaysia. What is it? Go Malaysia. Go Malaysia. Selamat datang. Brought this back to the hotel and it still sedap gila.
