The verdict

Great

Jason gives a solid 8.3, calling the cucur udang the best he's had in recent memory with an addictive batter and fresh prawns. Prices are very high (T20-level), so it's a special-occasion place rather than a regular weekend spot. Staff service is excellent with a table call button.

Highlights

  • Price: Cucur udang RM36, pie RM28, sandwich RM38 — Mahan and Mampus pricing
  • Taste: Addictive cempedak-style batter, fresh prawns, crispy flaky pastry, well-marinated lamb

  • Other: Walked in without appointment on a Saturday

I finally did it. I opened the TikTok Live to see which restaurant you want me to go and review. See, I knew it's Chef Wancho Mino at TTDI. He wanted me to try the cucu udang, which costs... hold on, I have the receipt. I'm going to keep this as my achievement. Cucu udang cost 36 ringgit. We walked straight in without any appointment. It was a weekend, I believe, Saturday. One look at the menu and you already know the pricing is T20. Mahan and Mapples, drinks first, iced lemon tea, zestiness good, sweetness ngam. Teh tarik had just the right amount of that. Teh tarik leaf flavour. You know what I'm talking about, if it's too strong, it causes you the headache. If it's too light, it doesn't even taste like teh tarik. Just nice. Except for the price. That one cannot justify it. Especially for just teh tarik and iced lemon tea. Both a 7 for me. By the way, their staff service is very good. Super polite, they have a button on your table that when you press, they just come immediately or they come very... Jangan takku nek. Cucu pie, 28 ringgit. The pastry was crispy, flaky and moist. The lamb marinated well. Almost with a rendang type of taste but not quite. The lamb was cooked a tiny bit dry. Giving this a 7.1. Pulled beef sandwich, 38 ringgit. Portion on the hand pulled beef was so generous. I think this is 2 inch. I had to open my mouth that big to take a bite. Marination was unique. I've never really had that taste before. It was somewhat roasted and then like summer taste profile as the teriyaki sauce. The sourdough bread was done very well. I remember having it in the... I think it's the Elephant Cafe. This salmon toasty is so cold, hard and stale. Like I was eating a brick but this one it was crispy on the outside and then super soft on the inside. Finally, udang cucuk for 36 ringgit when usually if you order from Pasar Malang, Jalan Tepi Stores, 1-2 ringgit per piece. But I noticed... This thing is huge. Easily can fill 3 to 4 packs. Besan amampas! I know some of you want me to bash it but I have to say the cucuk udang tepung taste ah. In recent memory, the best I've had. Oh the batter's a duck. Pair it with this peanut sauce. Cool. One is the crispy one which I prefer. Another one is the lembut soft, soft a bit one which is what my girlfriend prefers. The taste of the tepung ah, that cempedak flour taste but not really. There's something special that they add in. It just feels very addictive. You will get jela. You know you have those type of food where you really like it but once you eat it, you tell yourself I only want to come back next month. I feel this cucuk udang is like that. The prawn fresher than most I've tried but other than that, the taste is so typical. Biasa I'd have to give it a solid 8.3. It's a Mahan at Mampus place that I would go for special occasions. It's easier to justify the price but no way will I go there for a typical Saturday night. Price is up here, but taste also around the same place. Happy birthday!
