Jason gives Fairy Milk's crème brûlée bingsu a 7.8 — a milky, custardy, caramel-popcorn dessert with a torched sugar crust where all the flavours work together. The downsides are the RM32 price and how quickly it melts into a watery, cheaper-tasting drink, so it must be eaten fast. Best shared between two people.

Highlights

  • Price: RM32 for a large bingsu that can be shared between two people
  • Taste: Milky, custardy and buttery with caramel-popcorn notes; balanced sweetness, nothing overly done
  • Ambiance: Popular SS15 dessert cafe where nearly everyone orders the crème brûlée bingsu
  • Other: Melts fast — once watery it feels like drinking the dessert, so eat it immediately

Never thought I'd see this fusion of crème brûlée and bingsu. We went to Ferry Milk at the Diabolical SS15, and it seems like everyone who comes here has tried this menu item. Crème brûlée bingsu, 32 ringgit. Memang mahanaman, boing! Holding this feels like I'm taking out frozen chicken breast inside the fridge. It's very, very cold. Oh! Feels very light. Wow, milky, custardy texture, caramel, popcorn kind of taste. And you get lightness from the vanilla which adds sweetness also. On top is the torched sugar crust, and then after that is the, I think, French vanilla custard. Bottom is their bingsu. Looks fluffy, let's try. There's like a sour bit inside, but the bingsu itself, not the fluffiest I've tried. Afternoon is fluffier, I think Snow Plus is also fluffier. Immediately it turns to velvety liquid. Actually I need to take this out lah. Lupa. Here we go, strawberry dip. Ooh, okay. It's not like super thick, but it's saucy. Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh. Balance on sweet and sour. It also has this like, plummy flavour on top of the strawberry. Overall right, the mouthfeel, very pleasant. Nothing is overly done, it's not overly sweet, hard or oily, the texture. Because of that custardy thing that they put, it's also giving buttery. After a while, I think it becomes very, very watery. And then you can see chunks of the custard outside. I'm guessing this is Biscoff Crumbs. Let's add. Honestly, I'm not sure what crumbs is this. Crunchiness to an otherwise soft-feeling dessert. I think this is a vanilla scoop with their wafer. The vanilla has a unique flavour, it's not a typical vanilla extract that you find from a one ringgit ice cream. This is like, like a butterscotch. The wafer tastes like kueh bahulu, crunchy version. Very light and easy to crumble crunchy. I don't know what is this like, small, ready, ready bits here, but could be free striped strawberry. I think it's that. Yeah, it is. It's strawberry, for sure. I think it's to add more crunchiness and add a hint of sourness to balance the flavour. Bad thing about this thing is price. Also, the eating life of this, once you get it served to you, you have to eat it fast. Once it's melted, the experience is not as nice. You don't get the texture, it's just a very liquidy, cheaper feeling. In fact, at this point, it's like you're drinking the dessert already. But you can share it with two people. The combination of all the flavours work. I give it 7.8.
