The verdict
BolehJason checks out HOMM, a newly opened bingsu shop in SS15, Subang Jaya, on a very packed opening day, working through six bingsus and shokupan toasts. The coconut and pandan shokupan is the clear winner at 8/10 with its kopitiam-style crispy-edged, fluffy toast, while the RM33 Pink Himalayan Avalanche bingsu flops at 4.8 for tasting like cheap sirap bandung. Verdict: the shokupans are top tier, but choose your bingsu wisely.
Highlights
- Price: Premium dessert pricing — Pink Himalayan Avalanche Bingsu RM33, Salted Egg Shokupan RM28
- Taste: Shokupans are the strength (coconut pandan 8, salted egg 6.7); bingsus are hit-and-miss — Thai tea avalanche 6, mango sticky rice 7.1, pink Himalayan 4.8
- Ambiance: Very packed during opening hour on a rainy day; the new SS15 dessert spot drawing a crowd
- Other: Brand-new bingsu shop — Jason jokes SS15 needs its own bingsu lane; mango sticky rice version uses a fluffier shave than the avalanche bingsus
Dishes tried
- Signature Thai Tea Avalanche BingsuScore 6.0 out of 10
Extra aromatic Thai tea (cha tra mue style, very 'kao') with crispy ice and ice cream, but only an okay 6.
- Coconut and Pandan ShokupanScore 8.0 out of 10
Kopitiam-toast vibes — crispy edges, fluffy middle, extra toasted coconut sweetness; the best thing he tried.
- Pink Himalayan Avalanche BingsuScore 4.8 out of 10
Tastes like cheap sirap bandung and isn't fluffy enough for RM33 — 'this is for the gram'.
- Mango Sticky Rice BingsuScore 7.1 out of 10
Fluffier shave ice with good sticky rice (a bit porridge-y soft) and slightly jeruk-sour mango; preferred over the avalanche.
- Taro Shokupan KatsuScore 5.5 out of 10
Sweet taro paste and crispy katsu braid, but a honey-burnt taste throws it off.
- Salted Egg ShokupanScore 6.7 out of 10
Top-tier golden bakar toast, salty buttery with a light crisp, but the salted egg is barely there (tak cukup).

Signature thai tea avalanche mum. Woohoo! The diabolical SS15 has a new bingsu shop. As it's raining today which makes it worse. Very packed opening hour because home is where the heart is. Signature thai tea avalanche bingsu dropping. Oh. It's like crispy pay ice. More of their thai tea sauce. Condensed milk maybe? Let's try. Ice cream with bingsu. It's an extra aromatic cha chon way where the thai tea leaf is very kao. Filling in your mouth is ice cha chon. 6. Coconut and pandan shokupan. I like that. Oh this is too big. I can see two people who will really like this. Breaky toast. And coconut lovers. Salted butter. Crispy on the edges. Fluffy in the middle. And somehow the coconut. This is the kind of toast when you go to a kopitiam is what you're searching for. There's this extra toasted sweetness in the coconut ice cream also. Now we are talking. 8. Pink Himalayan Avalanche Bingsu. Mahao Ngak Mam. This is red bean paste. Let's add that. It tastes like a very cheap sirup bandung. For RM33, the bingsu has to be at least fluffy. This is for the gram. 4.8. Mango sticky rice bingsu. Did they use a better shave ice machine? More fluffy. Ya you know, now this tastes more like bingsu. This sticky rice tastes good but a little too porridge-y soft for me. I prefer it firm and got a bounce one. I don't know what it is. The mango is giving me some jeruk sourness. I'll choose this over the Avalanche. 7.1. Taro Shokupan Katsu. It's fried bread ah. Let's dig a little deeper. I'm liking that sweet taro paste. But the crispy katsu braiding on the outside. Let's try with this. I just can't get over that honey burn taste. It's throwing me off. 5.5. Salted Egg Shokupan. RM28. Oh ho ho. Top tier toast. The layer of golden brown bakar. Salty buttery. That light crisp. Then you bite into fluffiness. This is almost like eating the other coconut shokupan. But the light version. But I'm questioning where the salted egg is. Takao la. Just because the toast is so good. 6.7.
