Jason tries six dishes at Hongkye Spicy Soup in Klang, with the signature spicy soup and Huatiao Chicken standing out. The Hainanese chicken, lala soup and kangkong belacan all fell flat. Overall a mixed but worthwhile visit.

Highlights

  • Price: Six dishes ranging RM12-38, about RM119 total

Trying 6 dishes from Klang. It's called Hongkye Spicy Soup in Bandar Botany. The first dish is Huatiao Chicken for RM17. The chicken meat is lean. It's very homey, it's a bit spicy. Sauce is on the thicker side. It's better than my mum! Vingible, 7.5. Next one, not my favourite, Hainanese Chicken Half for RM38. Usually it's too fatty. Why you take the drumstick? You got another drumstick. Very raw chicken taste, even with the black sauce, blend. The girlfriend really like Hainanese Chicken. Yellow Wine Lala Soup, RM18. The lala smell is so strong. Fish market smell. 3.5. Kangkong Belacan, RM12. First bite I already knew something was off. It's too soggy, not crunchy, it's not even spicy at all. I don't like this taste and tasting. Their signature Hongkye Spicy Soup, RM17. The pepper is calm but not over. It doesn't take over the taste. What takes over the taste? It's the lembu pandai essence and the chicken. The meat is very tender, 7.9. Wow, pao roh, RM17. Also known as... Flaming Explosive Meat. Ooh, the spice kicked my throat man! Why I was worried about this dish is it would be too fatty. Lembu pandai meat is all very lean, also spicy, but it's like dried chili type of flavour. It tastes very similar to another Chinese, called Salted Egg Pot Belly Pot. Except it doesn't have the salted fish taste off. It's a bit misleading because it's called Flaming Explosive Meat, but it's not as spicy as I want it to be. It's 7.2.
