Jason finds Jibril decent but not mind-blowing: the salted egg butter combo is the winner at 7.6, while the chilli butter clams and biscoff smoothie fall flat. Worth a try for the speakeasy vibes, but parts feel criminally overrated.

Highlights

  • Price: RM27.90 combo, RM29.90 clams, RM15.90 smoothie; slightly above average price but portions okay

  • Ambiance: Speakeasy vibes behind a secret brick wall with velvet wallpaper and a Machiavelli portrait
  • Other: 12,000+ Google reviews at 4.7 stars; sauce turns starchy if left under air-con

Everyone knows this place, 12,000 over reviews, 4.7 Google Ratings, a big sign called Jibril, at least it's my first time trying. Behind this secret brick wall is a place that oozes speak-easy vibes, velvet wallpapers, and for some reason, a portrait of Machiavelli. I was playing pretend detective, finding out if food here is sedap or criminally overrated. Salted Egg Butter Combo, RM27.90. They gave a generous portion of their butter sauce. Squid, prawn also got, ayam punada. I'm definitely getting sweetness first. Deep fried oil, with the coarseness from the Pouring some of their salted egg butter sauce. It's very sweet. A bit salty, cheesy vibes, not bad taste. We'll go try their sotong. If you leave this salted egg butter sauce for a while under this air-con, it's gonna turn starchy. Flashbacks of gold chilli, this is giving me condensed milk. Without the sauce, the meat you're getting here is a little more savoury because it's stronger on the salted egg flavour. Adding this in will make it sweet and creamy. It increases the level of mockability. It might be a little above average in terms of price, but the portion is okay. 7.6. Hot chilli butter clam, RM29.90. Comes with six pieces of mantou. Lala got the firmness. Do you hear that? I'm about to bite on some sand. The body of the mussel when you bite in, it's got the briny, salty sea water type of flavour. Very mineral-ish. The hot chilli butter sauce. Light creamy, tomato-based, red chilli seed spicy cake with a sweet garlicky aftertaste. Dipping the mantou in now. Still preserving that thin crispy outer layer. Inside, you get a slightly sweet, briny, almost beasty texture. The lala is average in size, but more importantly, I think it's consistent also. One thing is not rubbery. The one key thing that's leaving a big gap for me is the sauce. I'm not getting much of the butter for the taste. Somehow, it feels like a diluted version of what it should be. 6.7. Ice biscoff coconut smoothie, RM15.90. It's airy, slightly oily. The biscoff crumbs, I feel the caramel flavour. Gaul, gaul with the coconut smoothie. The texture is more watery than what I'm used to for smoothie. I'm not getting much coconut from this. More of that biscoff spread that they dashed around this glass. Cake in a cup type of drink. For me, I'm disappointed because it's lacking coconut. Imagine biscoff milkshake with whipped cream. 6.6.
