Jason finds a creative karipap spot in Taman Medan with eight unique flavours, though only the kambing truly impressed him. Solid, generously filled curry puffs at RM6 for three, but the buttermilk and carbonara flavours don't live up to their names.

Highlights

  • Price: RM6 for three pieces, average-ish pricing
  • Taste: Flaky shell, soft sweet-savoury inti, but flavours stray from their names
  • Ambiance: Roadside stall with lots of flies, visited in the rain
  • Other: Second-generation seller continuing his late father's two original flavours

We gotta be quick because it's raining. Curry pub ada apa jenis, eh? Ada 8 jenis, curry pub. There's a lot of flies here but this is 30 jalan, kan? The ring got so heavy we had to stay there. For rosai sellers they probably don't get any customers from this, drenched food and time that doesn't pay. It's bad, I'm not able to eat this on the spot. I'm coming back tomorrow to try. Second day, 8.36 a.m. I don't know why but curry pub is the one food I always forget where I order from. What I know I don't like is curry pub angin. I think it's because the inti is always the same kentang-kari but these guys are like they've got some unique flavours. It's called Kuih Muih 53. It's in Taman Medan. Who is here who creates flavour-favourite that really creative and can't do it? Of course, it's me. Oh you! I'm the second generation. I have a father. After he died, he only has two flavours. He's with kentang. You're making a big man. I don't know. What's your personal favourite? For me, buttermilk. Curry pub. Three piece for RM6. I'm going to say this is considered average-ish price because they are...prish? Average-ish? Average-ish? I don't know how to ink them. Curry pub is one of those things you can immediately tell whether there's flavour or not. Full of flavour inside, the inti feels sweet, salty, spice level about two, gamey meat smell comes in. Don't expect the lamb to be abundant here. Small chubis-chubis inside here. Mostly it'll be getting the soft, meshy feeling from the kentang. So the edges of the curry pub is very firm and light type of crisp, biscuity with a very clear deep-fried oil taste. The tengah-tengah is flaky, inside lembut-lembut and inti penuh. Solid standard curry pub that's on the sweeter side. For me I don't mind if they increase the price a bit but add even more kambing so you get to feel the texture as well. Makes it even more special. Because that kambing is so subtle, I don't mind eating the normal chicken one over this. 7.1 spicy buttermilk chicken, also 6 ringgit for 3 pieces. That daun curry taste is so strong. Owners right it's spicy. Ah, they betul-betul pedas. I know buttermilk got daun curry but it's more daun curry than buttermilk. Chunks of feels like chicken tender. Can you see the butt of the chili plati that's swimming inside the sauce? I'll give a spice level a three and a half or a four. But hardly any milky butteriness from this buttermilk. I get mostly a spicy, pungent, daun-ness flavour that I think comes from the daun curry. They also added onion inside here. I think that's what makes it a little pungent. Definitely more salty, savoury compared to the kambing. I think some people will still like the taste of this but for me if it doesn't taste like the name, it loses a lot of points. One thing though even though the sauce is more watery than I'd expect from a buttermilk, at least it doesn't seep through the pores of the curry pub shell. 6.4. Carbonara chicken in a curry pub. Actually I wanted to get sardine but one of our gang recommended me to get this instead. Six ringgit, three pieces. Very peppery and it seems like they put onion as well. They really like onion in their flavours. I don't know what it is but all I know is it's very peppery. Like the black pepper not your typical white pepper. On top of that herby Italian style kind of flavour I think it's parsley to add that extra slight pepperiness from it as well. It's not even that creamy. The lighter sauce that I've tried compared to the other two flavours. Plus why is it so oniony? Reminds me so much of that spring onion fish fillet, Gyeongchong ee pin. It feels very leakish. Out of all there are three curry pubs they're quite generous with the filling and the chicken that they use is considered very tender. No weird tendons inside or sinews. The only thing is flavours are not flavouring for me la. Compared to pasta carbonara this is far from it. Oh! Some sausage inside one but there's also spiciness that comes along with this. I think mostly it's the peppery kind of spice. And if you didn't put the label carbonara chicken there I would have never guessed this was that. 5.7 5.7 6.7.7.8
