Jason finds the hugely hyped Modu at KLGCC a mixed bag: the black truffle samgyetang is a standout at 7.5, but the smoked chicken and perilla versions fall flat. Comforting and healthy, yet pricey for the flavours delivered.

Highlights

  • Price: RM52-78 per dish, expensive for what you get
  • Taste: Real truffle shavings rich and earthy; other samgyetangs too light and home-cooked
  • Ambiance: Crowded KLGCC restaurant with surprisingly manageable queue
  • Other: 32,000 reviews, one of the most-reviewed spots he has seen

Memang mahal namam pui. Huh, what is the hype about? 32,000 reviews, the last time I saw a restaurant with this much la, was Archie Show Shedal. We are at the KLGCC brunch. It looks crowded but not a one-off-lour-Q la. First black truffle dish, I can very clearly smell it two feet away. What is the hype about? Earthy flavor is so rich. Real shavings ke powder? Real shaving punya. Oh, real shaving? Yes, semua kita pakai yang natural punya. Appreciate it, thank you so much. Slice off the bone. The skin is not skin anymore, it melts off into this collagen in a nice way flavor. Gluttiness pulot rice. Neutral tasting but the texture is nice, it's sticky. Dip it in that. Yeah, sweet salty. It doesn't feel like the usual goju jam I've tasted. Healthy person's dream dish. Oh my god even the chopstick. I'm so bad at using chopstick ah and it's still so easy to pick a piece up. Some of you might feel like the flavors are too light. I think this is exactly what they're going for. 7.5. Smoked chicken mahal namam pui. Grilled chicken by itself. And we think the breast part, so it's quite dry. Squeeze some lemon slice. Obviously the darker part mint is much nicer. Aromatic smoky Italian spice herb one like oregano. Siracha mayo. It's more creamy sweet mayo than spice. But for 78 ringgit. For what feels like half smoky aromatic and half very plain and dry chicken. 5.6. They're classic, apparently one of their best sellers. Upgraded ABC soups. I love adding a bit of salt. I have no complaints on the way they prepare the chicken. It's so tender. Hope they give more galtenus rice. It's like half of a small bowl. I was hoping for a little more of the herbly ginseng coming through but mostly chicken essence broth. As it tastes right now, it feels too home-cooked for 52 ringgit. 6.2. Perilla samgyetang. These are new flavours I'm experiencing. It's like nutty red dates without the sweetness. Just know when I eat the chicken by itself, it felt almost like papaya soup. Don't judge me. Slightly peppery but earthy. Aromatic tea flavour you know. If you're into salty dishes ah, that samgyetang is not for you and it tastes very comforting. But not gila-gila flavour bomb. Out of the tripods, this chicken somehow feels the driest. Something very niche is not my cup of tea or this is not my bowl of soup. 5.7
