Jason finds Old Town's Future plant-based menu decent but not better than the real thing, with the chicken popcorn the closest to meat. It's aimed at people going meatless rather than converting meat lovers, and Old Town's ubiquity makes it an easy option.

Highlights

  • Price: Drinks RM15, chicken popcorn RM12 for 15 pieces, nasi lemak set RM7.90
  • Taste: Flour and sauce carry the fake meat; popcorn most meaty, egg tastes like tofu
  • Ambiance: Standard Old Town cafe, familiar everyday chain setting
  • Other: Plant-based partnership with Future; sambal is underrated

Have you ever tried plant-based food? Old Town partnered up with Future to make plant-based meals. But Jason, why the f**k should I care? I had the same question in my head and Old Town gave me the answer. The first benefit? Fiber. Ah protein, the one we all love. Cholesterol, this one is important. Sugar. So we know plant-based food is a healthier option but the whole point of this review is to see if it tastes better, same or meh. This is the mocha cookie crumble with oat milk, 15 ringgit power of the ice, like chunky Milo. I don't taste much of the oats. Got coffee aftertaste, right? It's very subtle. Seven. 6.5. Old Town enriched chocolate. Since she's the expert of trying this kind of Old Town chocolate drink, I think she knows the difference. Shall we try to say it together? The taste. Okay. Three, two, one. Has a bit of soy. I feel it fights against the chocolate. It doesn't compliment it. Actually very fragrant you know, the soy. Three, two, one, six. I really like their chocolate. Hainanese, chick and chopped rice. What I usually order work lunch. Only difference is this is not chicken you know. Can it be healthy but also taste like chicken? Only egg with one D. Should we just try this on first? Yeah. Nope, it tastes like tofu. For it not tasting like egg when it's supposed to be only egg, I'm giving this a four. We're off to a rough start already. It very clearly does not look like chicken. It's trying to make it a bit textured instead of soft like tofu. It still doesn't taste like chicken but it tastes very close to the Hainanese chicken chopped rice because of the flour and the sauce. If you put your mind and tell yourself this is not chicken, this is not chicken, it's a decent taste. The portion of the meat not as much as the actual chicken one and the price is almost the same. 6.5. Chicken popcorn. It looks exactly like chicken popcorn. I think the trick is the flour makes it look like chicken popcorn because it gives that rough texture and also the shape of it, it's not blocky like how a tofu should look like but i think it's a tofu. The fried batter is really carrying the taste of the fried chicken popcorn flavor. See? It's not smooth right? This is the most closest to a meaty taste. 15 pieces for 12 ringgit more or less one ringgit per piece like this. 3 2 1 6.9 chicken curry. Normally when i order this nasi lemak right, they will have total rebus. Papadam is papadam right? Is it? Yeah, papadam is papadam. It's not enjoy you. If you are opting for a meatless alternative kind of have to expect it. Pay attention to the color of my face as i eat this sambal. One thing very underrated about Old Town is that sambal really got a cake and I really like the taste of it. She always order the nasi lemak bungkus most every time when we go for breakfast. The value set meal 7.90. Below my expectation of first impression I was expecting the meat to be in chunks. Very similar to the Hainanese chicken rice, which i think they use the exact same meat. They just cook it differently. Luncheon meat texture. It's a normal. I cannot imagine. Let me try a bit of the curry sauce. It has no difference from luncheon meat. The meat is so marinated with the curry sauce. You know lah curry tastes very meaty in a way. Giving this a 7.1. As a meat person, you are not going to prefer this over that. This is for the people who feel strongly about going more meatless. And you know lah there's not many shops around that plant-based or whatever and Old Town is everywhere.
