The verdict

Boleh

Jason samples new taufufa flavours from Sweets by Baby at the Havoc Dataran Karnival food festival in Shah Alam. The tau huay itself is silky and melts in the mouth, but he finds the sauce watery and diluted and wishes the corn version was creamier. The brown sugar boba disappoints with clumpy, mushy boba, and he concludes the original taufufa is still the best.

Highlights

  • Price: Around RM6-8 a bowl — jagung RM8, brown sugar boba RM6.30, milky version RM6; he notes it is not cheap
  • Taste: Tau huay silky and melt-in-mouth, but the watery sauce lacks contrast; corn skin adds nice crunch; brown sugar boba is clumpy, mushy and biscuit-like
  • Ambiance: Bustling outdoor food carnival (Havoc Dataran Karnival) at the Shah Alam stadium grounds
  • Other: Waze tip: search 'Perkarangan Stadium Shah Alam' — they wazed the wrong place three times because of similarly named locations

Dishes tried

  • Taufufa jagung (golden sweet corn)

Silky tau huay with crunchy corn skin and real corn flavour, but the watery sauce feels diluted — wished it was creamier like a custard

    Score 6.5 out of 10
  • Brown sugar boba taufufa

Clumpy and not cheap; boba more mushy than bouncy and tastes like a strawberry jam biscuit instead of brown sugar

    Score 5.0 out of 10
  • Original tau fu fa

Still the best in his book — the classic soy-based version beats all the new flavours

    Score 7.5 out of 10
  • Milky tau fu fa

RM6 option for those who prefer a milky taste over soy

    Score 6.5 out of 10

Jason, saya harap rasa rasa baru ini sesuai dengan awak. Saya takut! Macam rasa bersalah selalu cakap nama awak, Baby. Tak apa, semua panggil saya Baby. Oh, betul? Cakap dia Baby. Baby. 16. 16. Mahanak Mampus. Tak boleh cakap sebab bos. The golden sweet corn is corn. A big lump of nuts. I like the tau huay melts in your mouth. Oh, the skin of the corn went straight to my throat. I feel like when your sauce is watery and your tau huay is very silky, smooth, melt in your mouth, there's no contrast. Diluted, it feels. So I'm just hoping the jagung one especially was more creamier. You know like those black sesame is a little bit more custardy. I appreciate the crunchiness of the corn skin and what you get from the corn flavour. Expected sweet jagung kropo, the gardenia corn or the ice potong jagung. Sugary, vanilla, buttery note. For RM8, RM6.3. Eat brown sugar bao ba. Why is it so clumpy? Not cheap. Brown sugar rasa a little buttery. The boba is more mushy than bouncy, let's just say. You get this, I don't know, like the biscuit that has the strawberry jam in the middle one. I think it's the cremo strawberry biscuits or whatever. It tastes like that instead of the brown sugar boba that you're thinking about. I still think the original is the best. If you're the type that likes a more milky taste for the tau fu fa instead of soy, this one, RM6.
