The verdict

A dense, cheese-forward RM20 tiramisu that is undeniably value for money, but it lacks the airy lightness and roasted espresso punch of a proper tiramisu. The claimed 100% mascarpone makes it eat more like a heavy chocolate cake, with the driest ladies fingers he has tasted. Hardcore tiramisu lovers may not be satisfied, though casual dessert hunters get plenty for the price.

Highlights

  • Price: RM20 for a hefty 450g tiramisu, which he calls value for money
  • Taste: Thick velvety lemak mascarpone and bold bitter cocoa, but dry ladies fingers and no espresso roast
  • Ambiance: Queued 15 minutes with people already camping before opening; parking inside Laman Kuching DBKL
  • Other: Boss claims 100% mascarpone with no whipped egg white; sweetness around 5 to 6

I queued for my 4th tiramisu review, took me 15 minutes. They were still setting up and people were already camping. The only proper parking is next to it inside Lamang Kuching DBKL. What caught my attention on Yono Cafe and so many others is this apparently 450g 100% mascarpone cheese. RM20 tiramisu. To me that feels too good to be true. Salah was very cryptic on the mascarpone cheese part. He say got some special ingredients. It feels very heavy. Cake is holding its shape here. It tastes more like chocolate cake. The cheese is very thick. I like my tiramisu is a bit more dense but if it's too dense without the floaty airiness then it becomes more like birthday cake already. This macarapone cheese you can feel the lemak, velvety but the overall mouthfeel you are missing the lightness of a tiramisu and what I miss from Kees is the eggyness. And the ladies finger is the driest I've tasted. For me a bit too dry lah. Much like we didn't soak up enough that's why it's not spongy. They also have two layers of ladies finger. The bottom they soak it with some sort of coffee but it still feels very dry. It tastes like an acidic Nescafe instant packet but it's definitely very heavy on the cheese. Even heavier than CBTL. Boss claim this one is 100% mascarpone cheese. Maybe that's why it's so dense. He didn't add the whipped egg white. And the mascarpone cheese feels like oily whipped cream. They are very generous with the cocoa powder. Slightly bitter, bold chocolate flavour. Sweetness level I think around 5 to 6. It's not crazy but you definitely notice the processed sugar inside. Chocolate cake is more chocolaty than this and tiramisu is more tiramisu-y than this. And for hardcore tiramisu lovers right this one might not satisfy your craving because it doesn't have the kaw or espresso flavour. The roastedness of the coffee. First bite cheesy chocolate cake for sure. And I get it, it's value for money. If I compared to Keith's tiramisu at 250 grams but at this price this would cost RM11++ on me. Of course this one doesn't have the thin and all but most of the time you might be coming just for the tiramisu. It's lacking some of the key flavours of a tiramisu that I like.
